Lady Cougars Breeze By Tornados 95-57 and Head to Regionals

Asheville, NC – February 26, 2005 – Asheville High's Lady Cougars (29-0) took the wind out of the Hickory Red Tornadoes (26-3) and slammed them 95-57 en route to their 51st consecutive victory and a third straight trip to the 3A Western Regionals.  All-American Rashanda McCants led the stats with 27 points, 11 rebounds, 8 assists and 6 blocks.  Fellow seniors Lauren Powell had 26 points; Danielle Burgin had 21 points, 13 rebounds, 8 blocks; and Maya Mitchell added 15 points.  The Lady Cougars are ranked 23rd in the nation in the iHigh.com poll, and will take on West Rowan (26-4) in the Regionals at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 2nd at the Joel Coliseum annex in Winston-Salem.Click here for the complete Asheville Citizen-Times article on this game. Lady Cougars Win 50th Consecutive Game and Roll On to the Sectional Finals

Asheville, NC – February 24, 2005 – The Asheville High Lady Cougars basketball team (28-0) demolished E. Gaston 78-52 for their 50th consecutive victory to reach the 3A Sectional Finals.  The Lady Cougars will play Hickory (26-2) at home on Saturday, February 26th.  It is once again BLACKOUT NIGHT – all Cougar fans are asked to dress in black.  Go Lady Cougars!!

All first round sectional games are scheduled for Tuesday, February 22 at 7 p.m. All sectional semifinals are scheduled for Thursday, February 24 at 7 p.m., with sectional finals on Saturday, February 26.

Rashanda McCants Named Double All-American

Rashanda McCantsAsheville Girls Basketball senior standout Rashanda McCants was recently selected as one of twenty women to play in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association All-American Game at the University of Indianapolis on April 2nd. She has also been named a McDonald's All-American and will play in that prestigious all-star classic at the University of Notre Dame on March 30th.

McCants (6'2″, 20.6 ppg, 7.9 rebs, 5.1 assts, 5.2 steals, 3.2 blocks) is one of only four WNC girls to score over 2,000 career points.  Last season, she was named the 2004 Asheville Citizen-Times All-WNC Player of the Year, and iHigh.com's 3A Miss Basketball for North Carolina.  She will play for the UNC Lady Tarheels next season. 

McCants shares the All-American honor with two of her family members: brother Rashad McCants (UNC-CH) in basketball, and cousin Cameron Maybin (T.C. Roberson HS) in baseball.  Congratulations, Rashanda!
