–Lady Rams fall to White Oak, who wins third straight championship

Written on 25 May 2008 by

RALEIGH - Angela Cole had two goals and Stephanie Rose added a goal and an assist as Jacksonville White Oak rolled to a convincing 4-0 victory over previously unbeaten Roberson on Saturday afternoon in the NCHSAA’s women’s 3-A soccer championship at Paul Derr Stadium at N.C. State.

White Oak won its third consecutive state championship and was in the finals for the fourth consecutive year. The Lady Vikings finished the season with a 21-1-1 mark and won their last 10 in a row.

Roberson was in the finals for the sixth time, but is still seeking its first state championship in women’s soccer.

Cole, a sophomore midfielder, opened the scoring in the 39th minute, tallying off a ball served in the box by Rose, who was chosen the championship Most Valuable Player.

Then the Lady Vikings put it away with two goals in a three-minute stretch early in the second half.

Freshman Emma Barber knocked in a cross from Amanda Fenton in the 49th minute to put White Oak ahead 2-0, and then three minutes later Rose ripped a rocket to the back of the net, scoring her 43rd goal of the season, off a pass from Kristal Tucker to run the count to 3-0.

Cole got the final goal with less than five minutes to play.

White Oak had 13 shots on goal for the game to just five for Roberson.

The loss for the Lady Rams was their first of the year after 28 consecutive victories and they entered the game ranked #1 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll.

–Polk Co runs up against tough defense in Dixon

Written on 24 May 2008 by

RALEIGH‹- Dixon’s defense made an early goal stand up in a 1-0 victory over Polk County on Saturday afternoon in the NCHSAA’s women’s 1-A soccer championship at Paul Derr Stadium at N.C. State.

The only goal of the game came in the contest’s 14th minute, with Paige Schoonover assisting Chelsea D’Zurilla on her 19th goal of the season. D’Zurilla’s long shot was misplayed and just trickled into the goal.

Polk County pressed forward in an effort to tie it in the game’s final minutes and dominated the ball, but just could not break the Dixon defense. The defensive effort was keyed by junior defender Jaime Edens, who was selected as the game’s Most Valuable Player, and senior Lesleigh Thompson in goal.

The Lady Wolverines outshot Dixon 13-7 on the day.

Both teams were making their initial trip to an NCHSAA women’s soccer final. Dixon, which lost in last year’s tournament in the state semifinasl to eventual champion Raleigh Charter, wound up 16-2-2 overall.

The Bulldogs advanced into the playoffs as a wild card, but won more playoff games in this run to the state title five then it had
previously in the history of women¹s soccer at the school. Polk ended its year 16-6-2.
