NCHSAA Division II Championship:
1982: 4A - Asheville 21, Greenville Rose 7
Under Coach Bruce Peterson AHS finished the regular season 9-1, the o­nly blemish a o­ne-point loss to Western 4-A Conference champion Ashbrook.
(Placed in the two-week 4-A Division II playoffs, AHS defeated Charlotte Independence and quarterback Mark Maye, the state’s player of the year, 50-29, with 1,000-yard rushers Scott Roberts and Pete Calhoun scoring three touchdowns each.)

Player, and Then Coach, In State Championship
Mickey Ray is the o­nly person to play o­n a State Championship team (Division II, 1982) and coach o­n another (Assistant Coach, 2005).  Ralph James played o­n the 1922 State Championship team and was head coach (1941-44) but never won a State Championship.  However, his team was National Runner-up in 1941.

2002: Asheville led Ashbrook at home in the 3AA semifinal game. Lost 22-19 in overtime. Ashbrook went o­n to win the state championship.

Scarborough scored TD's o­n receptions of 69 and 64 yards and broke a 50-yarder that set up the game- winning field goal as Asheville ruined 4A (and eventual State Champion ) A.C. Reynolds' unbeaten record, 16-14, in a Mountain Athletic Conference game. QB Rance Rhodes was 11-22 passing for 263 yards and 2 TDs.

NC Coach of the Year (Associated Press):
2005 - Danny Wilkins, Head Coach - directed AHS to a 15-0 season and 13-10 victory over Western Alamance in the 3A State Championship. Wilkins had a 40-3 record over the last three years (2003-05), was also named the WNC Coach of the Year and will coach in the East-West All Star Game in July 2006.

Cougars Can Add to Illustrious History

A stroll through the history of Asheville High football provides glimpses of some of the greatest players and coaches in WNC prep sports.
This year’s edition of the Cougars has a chance to slide in alongside a long list of worthy heroes who have played at Oates Field, McCormick Field, Memorial Stadium, Cougars Stadium and every other venue AHS footballers have dug in cleats and walked sidelines.
Charlie “Choo Choo” Justice, who along with Henry Logan ranks among the best athletes this area has ever produced, was an electrifying triple threat in the early 1940s who went o­n to become a national hero at UNC.
Ray Roberts and Leonard Little both produced impressive NFL careers; tailback John Avery was a first-round draft choice of the Miami Dolphins who still plies his skills in the Canadian Football League.
Craig King, who played an angry linebacker and starred at the University of Tennessee, was as good a finisher as I’ve seen o­n a high school field.
Ralph James played o­n the last football state championship team from AHS (1922) and later became the coach of the wildly successful teams of the early 1940s anchored by Justice.
Coach A.R. “Cap” Isbill, when the Lee Edwards teams (the forerunner to AHS) were called the Maroon Devils, was at the school from 1948-69, including 11 years as head football coach.
In a four-year span (1957-60), playing the best 4-A teams from across the state, Isbill went 29-7-4.
Bruce Peterson was a standout quarterback at Lee Edwards who came back to his alma mater for two successful stints as a head coach, winning more than 90 games in 1966-67 and from 1974-84. His teams finished first or second in conference play nine times and made six playoff appearances, including a Division II state title in 1982.
Lou Fogle, who left AHS after two successful seasons in the early 1970s to make his mark in South Carolina as a head coach, returned in 1988 to clean up a program that had four straight losing seasons, an unheard of run of below average football at this school.
Fogle cleaned up the mess and set the program o­n a course toward its current string of dominating play, his last game being the 1999 3-A state title game.
Today the Cougars have an opportunity to add to a history book full of accomplishments.
The current program under coach Danny Wilkins, in the fourth straight season of being among the two or three best 3-A teams in the state, has never been stronger (50-6 the last four seasons).
This year’s 14-0 squad has already set school records for most victories and consecutive wins in a season.
A victory today would be just the second state championship in football at a school that has been playing the sport with distinction for at least 10 decades.
Comparing eras and teams, players and coaches, is a useless exercise that can provide no validity in terms of accuracy or expertise.
But 15-0 and a state title would rank the 2005 Cougars in a class few if any have ever achieved at a place that has long enjoyed great football.
