ASHEVILLE - October 26, 2007 - The Asheville field hockey team continues on it’s quest to win their first state title in their 19 years of existence.  They dispatched their semi-final opponent, the West Forsyth Titans, 2-0 to advance to the finals of the West Regional to be played on Saturday at 1:00.

Most of the play was spent on the Titans side of the fifty during the game.  It showed in the number of shots as the Lady Cougars had 17 shots on goal, with nine coming in the first half and eight in the second.  West Forsyth only had three shots on goal the whole night.

"It’s nice to win in front of the home crowd," said the Cougars’ coach Lauren Kaye.  "We had faculty out here tonight who had never seen a field hockey game before."

Corners also went into the favor of Asheville, who had seven, with West getting only one.  Ryan Nuckolls had two saves for the Lady Cougars and Kileigh Browning had 13 for the Titans.  Elizabeth Gaston scored her 10th goal of the season he only goal of the season with 17:35 left in the period.  The assist came from Mallory Silver.

Senior Tracey Barrett, in a wild scramble in front of the goal, slid one past Browning that barely made it past the post, for Asheville’s second goal, her 4th of the year.  "Everytime that Coach Kaye says to score, I somehow find a way to do it," said Barrett.  "I ‘ve had four goals this year and on every one of them, she had told me earlier to score.  It’s awesome playing in front of the home crowd, especially when Mt Tabor and R J Reynolds are cheering against you too.  I love playing here."

In the second game, R J Reynolds beat Mt Tabor, 4-3 on penalty shots, to advance to the regional finals against the Lady Cougars.

They play at 1:00 on Saturday afternoon.
