Sophia Treakle [3]Sophia Treakle had a fantastic year in outdoor track culminating at the State 3A Track Meet in Greensboro where she doubled with state championships in both 100m and 300m hurdles.  Coming off a winning distance season with Brian Schultz and the varsity Cross Country team, sophomore Treakle ran the indoor winter season competing in the 300m sprint and 60m hurdles, finishing third in hurdles at the 3A State Meet in Chapel Hill.

Using this as a warm up, Treakle dominated hurdles in western North Carolina throughout the spring with comfortable wins for Asheville High and Coach Randy Ashley in 100m and 300m hurdles at every school meet.  Subsequent achievements included not only MVP honors for girls' track at the Mountain Athletic Conference Meet at North Buncombe, but also new records in both hurdle races at the Regional Meet in Cullowhee, followed by the strong double state championships.

She concluded the high school running season with a PR of 14.90s in the 100m hurdles and 44.67s in the 300m hurdles. She was surprised and delighted to be name co-MVP for girls' track at the State 3A Meet and is now included on NC Prep Track's "All Time" list in the 300m hurdles. Her most thrilling moment may have been her initial victory in the 100m hurdles at the State 3A Meet when she came from behind to edge out the competition at the finish line by three-hundredths of a second. An amazing day!

Treakle has continued to compete in hurdles since finishing the academic year, racing at the Nike Outdoor Nationals invitational in June and running throughout the summer with the Asheville Lightning Track Club in Junior Olympics competition with her long time coach Lee Pantas. In mid-July at the Junior Olympic Regional Championships in Richmond, Va., she took a third place in the 400m hurdles competing against top athletes from Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and Maryland. This win qualified her to compete in the USATF Junior Olympic National Championships in Los Angeles, where she will start against the nation's best in track and field.

When she was ten years old this future Cougar attended her first track practice. After seeing a 100m hurdle race for the first time she pointed and said to her mother, "I want to do that!" We're glad she followed through. There is a good chance her next two years at Asheville High prove to be just as exciting.
