The Asheville High Weight room recently received approximately $40,000 in equipment upgrades and replacement. The new weight equipment replaces 15-20 year old equipment, much of which was “hand me down” when it was received. Several contributors and sponsors donated the money needed to purchase the equipment.

Although the weight room has been refurbished in time for the upcoming football season, the weight equipment gets far more usage from people who are not part of the team.

“Most of our athletic teams use the weight room, not just football,” said Danny Wilkins, head football coach.  Wilkins added, “the majority of weight room usage each day is not athletes, but the general student body who signs up for mens' and womens' weight training classes.  The weight room serves athletes and non-athletes alike, and is a valuable part of our school curriculum.” Some faculty members also make routine use of the facility. The weight room serves an average of 200 students daily, both male and female, athletes and non-athletes.

An added bonus of purchasing new equipment allows Asheville Middle School to receive the old weights to start their own program. The middle school previously had little to no weight equipment, and their new addition “will greatly benefit and hundreds by allowing them access to weight equipment for the first time,” said Wilkins.

“We have always taken pride in our weight room as a first class facility,” said Wilkins, adding that the time and age of the old equipment placed us “behind others such as Tuscola, Smoky Mountain, and Erwin High School just to name a few who have already or are in the process of completely revamping their weight rooms.”

The new weight room will be a vast improvement that students can enjoy for years to come, and continue to set Asheville High's facilities apart from other schools. Thank you to all the sponsors and contributors who made the addition of the new equipment a reality.
