 One of the biggest football rivalry matchups in Buncombe County is Asheville and A.C. Reynolds. Despite close proximity of the schools and bordering districts, the first gridiron meeting between the two came in 1977. Click on the image to read a 1977 Asheville Citizen article about the game. The AHS football team received their 2005 State Championship rings at the Football Banquet on March 20th. A look at Asheville High's first football title follows, taken from the 1922 Yearbook. (Asheville later won the state men's basketball championship the same year). Click on the pictures to enlarge.  The football team of 1922 will always be remembered and will go down in the High School’s history as the best team that ever represented the school. This year fully fifty men reported at the beginning of the season, and three teams were selected from this squad. At times it was very difficult to determine the first and second teams, but finally the squad was narrowed down to seventeen first-string men. Click Read More below.
