Asheville, NC – December 25, 2004 – O­nce again, Asheville High football is well-represented o­n the Asheville Citizen-Times’ All-WNC football team released today.  The Cougars, who finished the season with a 12-2 record and advanced to the state 3A semifinals, feature the All-WNC Player of the Year, four additional First-Team picks, two Second-Team players, and five Honorable Mentions.  They are:

Player of the Year and First Team Running Back:
Johnny White (junior, running back) All-MAC;223 rushes for 2,184 yards and 39 TDs; 15 pass receptions for253 yards and 2 TDs; 31.5 tackles; 4 pass deflections; 3 sacks; and 2 forced fumbles.

First Team:
Crezdon Butler (junior, QB/athlete) All-MAC; 41-96-5 passing for 714 yards; 145-1,495 rushing and 17 touchdowns; 17 tackles; 8 pass deflections; 1 interception and 1 forced fumble.
Michael Bolanos (senior, offensive line) All-MAC; blocking helped Cougars rush for 4,707 yards and pass for 781 yards with 67 total TDs.
Marcus England (senior, linebacker) All-MAC; 132 tackles; 6 sacks; 5 tackles for loss; 4 forced and 1 recovered fumble.
Neville Hayes (junior, punter); punted for 42.7 yard average; kicked 61-66 extra points and 6-11 field goals.

Second Team:
 
Roger Reid (senior, defensive line); Elijah Harrison (senior, defensive back)

Honorable Mention:
Jovan Aiken, Brandon Fant, Josh Israel, Kadeem Morgan, and Evan Pappas

Football Concord, NC - December 3, 2004 - The shock, disappointment, and hurt are beginning to settle in . . . Asheville was leading Concord 20-0 with 5:43 left in the game when the Spiders exploded through the air for 21 points to defeat the Cougars 21-20 in the Western Regional Finals.  The Cougars (12-2) dominated the game through three-and-a-half quarters.  Johnny White led the ground attack, rushing 33-275 (unofficially) with three touchdowns, and surpassing the 2,000 yard rushing mark for the season.  Coach E.Z. Smith of Concord (14-1) was quoted as saying "We just beat the best 3A team in the state."  We have to agree. 

Cougars, we are so proud of you for yet another outstanding season!  Coach Wilkins, you and your staff have done an outstanding job.  If the expectations weren't so high, this would not hurt as much.  Good luck to the seniors and thank you for your many contributions.  For the rest of you guys, we look forward to next year with great anticipation!

Football Lawndale, NC - November 26, 2004 - Asheville needed some big plays and a trick or two as the Cougars outlasted the Burns Bulldogs' passing attack and held o­n for a 35-28 win.  Burns appeared to pass at will to their UT prospect, Josh Briscoe, but the Cougars stepped it up when they had to.  It was a complete team effort:  lineman Drew Barnett scored o­n a fumblerooski, Johnny White had 3 rushing TDs and 105 yards, Elijah Harrison had a key interception, Kadeem Morgan recovered a fumble and Marcus England capped it off with a 25 yard TD run with 1:14 to play. 

Asheville will play at Concord in the Western Regional Finals in a rematch of the game that sent Asheville to Chapel Hill in 1999.  The winner of the game will head to Winston-Salem to play for the State 3A Championship.  Good luck Cougars!
