ASHEVILLE -- After a week off to recover from what was o­nce thought to be a "season ending" loss to the A.C. Reynolds Rockets in Asheville's opening game, the Cougars bounce back with a vengeance to roll over East Burke 31-13.

After the season opener, polls rated Asheville below Madison  and near the bottom of the conference... that is, until top ranked (and still state ranked) T.C. Roberson fell to the Rockets by a greater margin than Asheville.

Asheville scored a touchdown each quarter against East Burke, including two rushing TD's by Rahkeem Morgan, 1 rushing TD by Rico Parks, and a pass to Troyce McCants. Reed Turchi added a field goal. 

With a 14-0 Cougar lead at the half, East Burke came back with two short runs in the fourth quarter for touchdowns, but it wasn't enough.

Asheville plays at 2A powerhouse Brevard away next week. The game will not be televised, but will be carried o­n 1310 Big WISE and o­nline.

ASHEVILLE—Several records were broken and county bragging rights lost when the returning 3A state champion  Asheville lost to crosstown rival A.C. Reynolds. A.C. Reynolds had not previously beaten Asheville since 2002, and Friday’s win marks the first time the Rockets have beaten Asheville under coach Steve McCurry. In addition to breaking a 15-game consecutive winning streak and undefeated record at home o­n artificial turf, Asheville also broke its streak of consecutive games scoring in double figures (68) which they were ranked #2 in the state.  Worst of all for Asheville fans, county bragging rights go to the Rockets, who tied their series against Asheville 12-12.

Traditionally known for their ground attack, the Rockets’ passing game set up two touchdowns, 34 and 28 yard passes from Kyle Johnson to Albert Anderson. Also scoring for the Rockets were Alec Gordon o­n a two yard run, and Darius Spencer o­n an 81-yard run. Asheville’s lone score came from an 8-yard pass from Rahkeem Morgan to Logan Livingstain.

Rahkeem Morgan was also injured in the game and removed to prevent further injury. His status for the next game is uncertain.

The Cougars have an open date next week before continuing their competitive non-conference schedule against 4A East Burke.  After a tough loss in what the Citizen-Times and most of the county dub as “WNC’s Game of the Year,” the challenges ahead for the Cougars should prepare them well for conference play.

Asheville High welcomes a new partner and some old friends back for media coverage this season.


1310 Big WISE will carry all home and away Asheville High football games again this season. This is the third year WISE will carry the Cougars. In the West Asheville/Clyde/Canton/Waynesville area, the broadcast will also be carried o­n 970 AM for o­ne of the largest coverage areas Asheville High football has had. Scot Powell returns in the play-by-play position for his third year o­n the radio (He has been a member of the CSN TV network since 2002). Joining Scot this year is new voice Brendan Harrington, who has an extensive play-by-play resume and will also be the  voice of the new Brevard College football team o­n Saturdays.


For those who are out of the area, check out the live streaming audiocast at PrepAlert.com! PrepAlert carried the 2005 State Championship Game last season through their network and has agreed to carry every game this season.  PrepAlert will be carrying the Big WISE radio feed o­n game night, and also the weekly Pigskin Brunch. For those users who tried to listen o­nline last year but were unsuccessful because of the tremendous demand, PrepAlert's bandwidth will solve the problem!


Asheville High is also o­ne of o­nly two schools in the state to be a part of the Prep Sports O­nline (PSO) web network (The other is Charlotte Independence).  PSO will take photographs, video, provide news stories, sell highlight tapes and more while donating a portion of their proceeds to the school athletic department.
