South Point defense stifles Asheville
An Asheville High offense that does not generate big plays struggles to win.  And Friday, the sixth-seeded Cougars couldn't even score against second-seeded South Point.  The Red Raiders held Asheville in check at Lineberger Stadium and notched a 28-0 home victory in the third round of the NCHSAA 3-A football playoffs.

The Asheville High defense didn't always have an answer for R-S Central, but the Cougars' offense passed its first postseason test with flying colors.  Senior tailback Greg Ray scored three touchdowns and rushed for 152 yards Friday at Memorial Stadium, leading the No. 6 seed Cougars to a 42-24 win over 11th-seeded R-S Central in the NCHSAA 3-A football playoffs. Asheville (8-3) will play the winner of tonight's Tuscola-Hunter Huss game next week in the second round.

Second place didn't seem like much motivation for an Asheville High football team accustomed to winning conference titles.  Now first place, that's a different story.

The Cougars rallied from a 10-point, second-half deficit Friday night to ruin North Buncombe's senior night and score a stirring 14-10 victory in the Mountain Athletic Conference. The win, combined with Tuscola's stunning home loss to Roberson, gives Asheville (7-3, 5-1) at least a share of the MAC title for the fourth straight season.
