Basketball : Cougars "Blackout" Charlotte Christian, McCants scores 2,000

Basketball
Asheville -- Cougar Fans dressed in black clothing in an attempt to "Blackout" visiting team Charlotte Christian o­n January 28. The Blackout was successful for the women, who came away with an 88-44 victory. Rashanda McCants was awarded the game ball for 2,000 carrer points. She gave a triple-double performance of 27 points, 12 steals and 12 assists.

Asheville lost to Charlotte Christian 2 years in a row, blemishing the two-time state champions' records, but not this year. 

Other players scoring in double digits were Danielle Burgin (18 points), Lauren Powell (17 points) and Maya Mitchell (16 points).

Basketball : CSN Cameras Capture Two Outstanding Basketball Games as Asheville Splits with Roberson

Basketball Asheville, NC - January 21, 2005 - The Cougar Sports Network is airing replays of the exciting Asheville/Roberson MAC Conference basketball doubleheader played at Asheville High o­n Friday.  (See schedule in the "On Air" Section.)

The two-time defending 3A champion Lady Cougars (18-0, 11-0) rallied from a three point halftime deficit to demolish the Lady Rams 73-56 for their 36th consecutive victory.  Asheville took the floor in the second half without leading scorer Rashanda McCants. In the first half, McCants picked up four fouls, including a technical foul.  With McCants o­n the bench, Danielle Burgin and Lauren Powell helped Asheville build a double-digit lead midway through the third quarter. Roberson would get no closer than nine points the rest of the game.  Powell failed to score in the first half, but caught fire in the third quarter. She scored the Lady Cougars' first seven points to give Asheville a 38-34 lead and scored all 13 of her points in the third quarter.  In the fourth quarter, McCants returned to the game and finished with 22 points, as did Burgin.  Great victory!

In men's action, Roberson defeated the Cougars 87-81 in OT.  Evan Pappas led Asheville with 29 points ( including nine 3-pointers!), while Matthew Pride added 27 points and 10 rebounds.  It was a heartbreaker to lose, but a great effort by the Cougars!

Basketball : AHS Alum Pee Wee Gash Stands Tall in EA Sports Tourney

Basketball Maui, HI - November, 2004 - Pee Wee Gash, former Asheville High Basketball standout and reserve guard for the Tennessee Volunteer Basketball team, received top honors at the 2004 EA SPORTS™ Maui Invitational Basketball Tournament over UNC player (and brother of Asheville High standout Rashanda) Rashaad McCants. The tournament was not a real basketball game, but a chance to play the video game NCAA® March Madness™ 2005.
