 Asheville High School, along with the high schools in the Buncombe County School System, will have new artificial turf football fields in place for the next football season.

Congratulations to the following Asheville High athletes who were named All-Conference in the Mountain Athletic Conference's 2004-05 winter sports:

Women's Basketball:
Rashanda McCants (Player of the Year); Lauren Powell; Danielle Burgin.

Men's Basketball:Matthew Pride; Nathan Mayfield.

Men's Swimming:Scott Blackwelder

Wrestling:Dietrich Rolfe

McCants Plays in McDonald's All Star Game

April 4, 2005 – AHS Lady Cougar and future NC Tar Heel Rashanda McCants continues to collect post season honors as she has been named to the Parade All-America Team, as selected by coaches, scouts, and recruiters.  McCants, a 6-2 forward, finished her senior season averaging 20.6 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 5.1 assists as the Lady Cougars (32-0) won their third consecutive 3A state title.  

McCants had previously been named  the NC Women’s Basketball Player of the Year by the Associated Press, First Team All NC by the AP, Gatorade NC Player of the Year, and a Women’s Basketball Coaches Association All American (she was MVP with 27 points in the game played April 2nd at Univ. of Indianapolis). 

Also, a reception was recently held at McDonald’s in Biltmore to recognize McCants’ selection as a McDonald’s All American.  She was presented luggage and a monogrammed All American game jersey to be worn in the McDonald’s All Star Game o­n March 30th at the Univ. of Notre Dame.  Asheville Mayor Charles Worley proclaimed March 25th as “Rashanda McCants Day” in Asheville.
