ASHEVILLE - Cursed no more.

High Point Andrews enjoyed its first visit to Western North Carolina. Asheville High senior Crezdon Butler wasn't feeling very hospitable for the second.

Butler rushed for 118 yards and three touchdowns as the top-seeded Cougars scored 20 unanswered points Friday to top the third-seeded Red Raiders, 20-12, at Memorial Stadium in the NCHSAA 3-A Western Regional championship.

"This one is special. It's not just for you; it's for every former player you see out here. You guys never stopped fighting," Asheville coach Danny Wilkins told his team following a delirious celebration.

Football Asheville -- The Cougars have a lot to be thankful for after their 35-7 victory over Gastonia's Hunter Huss at Memorial Stadium on "Black Friday." The Cougars in all black prevented the Huskies from getting a first down until the second quarter.

The biggest news of the game was a high ankle sprain for senior Johnny White which sidelined him for the entire second half. The loss of White could seriously hurt the Cougar scoring machine, as White became the first rusher in Asheville history to gain over 5,000 yards during this game. White remains questionable for the next game.

The Cougars face the Red Raiders from High Point T.W. Andrews at home next week. Andrews defeated Franklin at the Panther Pit 28-24 last week. The Cougars are 0-3 the past 3 consecutive years in the Regional finals, losing to Ashbrook (2002), South Point (2003), and Concord (2004). Each of those teams became the eventual state champion. Asheville has made 5 Regional final appearances since 1999, defeating Concord that year. One of the biggest losses in school history was in 2003 to the Red Raiders of South Point. Will the fourth consecutive year in the region final be the charm?
