Asheville -- The Cougars have a lot to be thankful for after their 35-7 victory over Gastonia's Hunter Huss at Memorial Stadium on "Black Friday." The Cougars in all black prevented the Huskies from getting a first down until the second quarter. The biggest news of the game was a high ankle sprain for senior Johnny White which sidelined him for the entire second half. The loss of White could seriously hurt the Cougar scoring machine, as White became the first rusher in Asheville history to gain over 5,000 yards during this game. White remains questionable for the next game. The Cougars face the Red Raiders from High Point T.W. Andrews at home next week. Andrews defeated Franklin at the Panther Pit 28-24 last week. The Cougars are 0-3 the past 3 consecutive years in the Regional finals, losing to Ashbrook (2002), South Point (2003), and Concord (2004). Each of those teams became the eventual state champion. Asheville has made 5 Regional final appearances since 1999, defeating Concord that year. One of the biggest losses in school history was in 2003 to the Red Raiders of South Point. Will the fourth consecutive year in the region final be the charm?

Asheville - November 11, 2005 - The Asheville Cougars football team (11-0) continued to dominate opponents as they cruised by Fred T. Foard (4-8) by a score of 42-3 in the first round of the NCHSAA 3A west playoffs. The Cougar defense, led by Kadeem Morgan and Derelle McMorris, held the Tigers to a lone field goal. The offense and special teams also made some big plays, including an 88 yard kickoff return for a TD by Johnny White, an 89 yard TD run by Crezdon Butler (136 yards on 6 carries), a 74 yard run by Troyce McCants and 2 TDs by Kadeem Morgan. Next week, the Cougars host 8th seeded Anson County (8-4) in the second round of the playoffs. Anson defeated South Point to advance. Cougars fans would have liked a chance to avenge the 2003 loss to South Point 57-10 in the semifinals (see CSN poll), but that must wait for a future date.
