November 15, 2008 -
The Asheville High defense didn't always have an answer for R-S Central, but the Cougars' offense passed its first postseason test with flying colors.  Senior tailback Greg Ray scored three touchdowns and rushed for 152 yards Friday at Memorial Stadium, leading the No. 6 seed Cougars to a 42-24 win over 11th-seeded R-S Central in the NCHSAA 3-A football playoffs. Asheville (8-3) will play the winner of tonight's Tuscola-Hunter Huss game next week in the second round.

Football November 8, 2008 - By Romando Dixson - Asheville Citizen-Times

Second place didn't seem like much motivation for an Asheville High football team accustomed to winning conference titles.  Now first place, that's a different story.

The Cougars rallied from a 10-point, second-half deficit Friday night to ruin North Buncombe's senior night and score a stirring 14-10 victory in the Mountain Athletic Conference. The win, combined with Tuscola's stunning home loss to Roberson, gives Asheville (7-3, 5-1) at least a share of the MAC title for the fourth straight season.

fieldhockey November 5, 2008 - By Romando Dixson - Asheville Citizen-Times

Is it the offense or defense that carries the Asheville High field hockey team?  “It's pretty much both,” coach Lauren Kaye says, laughing after she answers the debatable question.  Given the time of year, that may have been the politically correct response. But the question is indeed a tough one to answer.

CrossCountry November 2, 2008 - By Andrew Pearson , Asheville Citizen-Times

John Harwell went into the dense woods of Tanglewood Park a second time Saturday morning as a contender. The Asheville High junior came out as the NCHSAA 3-A boys cross-country champion, thumping down one triumphant stride after another.  Keenly using the vegetation as a landmark, Harwell threw forth a surge in the final 1,000 meters to win the Cougars' first state title since 2001 in 15 minutes, 57.36 seconds.
