AthleticNews AHS needs supporters to help upgrade the weight room.  Click "Read more" below for more details.
Dear Cougar Supporters:

My name is Danny Wilkins and I am the Head Football Coach at Asheville High School.  I am writing to a few "elite" fans in our community to explain a need and a plan for solving the need we are currently facing here at Asheville High.

Our need is twofold.  Our weight room is in need of renovation in terms of equipment.  Most of the equipment is 15-20 years old, and much of it was hand-me-downs when it came here.  Our middle school has no weight training program.  I would love to raise the money to completely renovate our facility and take the current equipment we have and place it in our middle school.  We have always taken pride in our weight room as a first class facility, but time and age is putting us behind others such as Tuscola, Smoky Mountain, and Erwin High School just to name a few who have already or are in the process of completely revamping their weight rooms.

One major misconception is that our weight room facility is for the football team.  I'm the coach and I assure you it is critical to our football program, BUT, most of our athletic teams use the weight room, not just football.  Beyond that point however, is the fact that the majority of weight room usage each day is not athletes, but the general student body who signs up for mens' and womens' weight training classes.  The weight room serves athletes and non-athletes alike, and is a valuable part of our school curriculum.  We also have some faculty members that make routine use of the facility.

Our goal is $35,000.00 to make this happen.  For those who will invest $500.00 or more in this project, we will create a recognition board in our weight room honoring those of you who made it possible.  You or your business will also be recognized at halftime over the public address system for each of our home games.  Cougar Sports Network executive producer Tim Amos has promised also to recognize you with a spot on Cougar Sports Network telecasts next year.  That becomes a great deal of exposure for those of you who may be interested in that.

I know we have the resources and community support to make this happen.  The money is out there, I've just got to find it.  Please help.

In order to expedite this project, I need a response from you quickly.  Please respond as soon as possible to let me know of your intentions.  You can respond in a couple of ways:  (1) mail a check to Asheville High School made out to "Asheville High School" in care of Danny Wilkins and on the memo write "weight room project," or (2) you can give me a call at (828) 255-5297 (gym) to ask more questions you need answered.

As stated earlier, this project is much needed and will impact many Asheville High and Asheville Middle students.  We average serving 200 students in our weight room every day, male and female, athletes and non-athletes.  The middle school students would greatly benefit and hundreds will get access to weight equipment for the first time.  Join Coach Gene Hammonds and myself in trying to make this vision a reality.

Please consider what you can do to help us.

Sincerely,

Danny Wilkins and Gene Hammonds
