AthleticNews The Asheville High Booster Club sponsored a special tribute to honor Athletic Director Lou Fogle, who will retire at the end of the 2003-2004 school year.  Fogle is completing his 18th year at Asheville High.  As Cougar Head Football coach for 14 seasons, Coach Fogle never had a losing season, compiling a record 115 wins and only 44 losses. The Cougars won six conference Championships and advanced to the 3A State Championship Game in 1999.
Prior to returning to Asheville, Fogle was selected the South Carolina Football Coach of the Year on two different occasions, once while at Dorman High School, and again at Lexington High School. Lou served a dual role as Head Coach and Athletic Director before handing the football program to Coach Danny Wilkins in 2000. Since that time he has overseen an athletic program that is consistently one of the best in the state.

Fogle's retirement will leave some "big shoes to fill" for incoming athletic director Rex Wells (pictured right). Wells is stepping in after serving as a teacher, assistant football coach, and former wrestling coach.

The ceremony to honor Coach Fogle was held at the Asheville High Auditorium on May 4th. The emcee of the event was Stan Pamfilis, sports director at 13 WLOS-TV in Asheville. Speakers included former assistant coach and player Bernard Jones; former dean of boys and principal O.L. Sherrill; former booster club president and parent Mack Salley; former school board member and parent Brian Weinkle; band director Mike Robinson; former player, parent, and CSN commentator Doug Piercy; former principal and coach Mike Mathews; CSN commentator, parent and assistant superintendent Tim Amos; former superintendent Doug Pearson; and special surprise guests including two of Fogle's former assistant coaches.

Each speaker told "Fact or Fiction" anecdotes about Fogle. The most recurring topics included Fogle's passion for shag music and dancing, his loyalty as a friend and coach, and his incredible racquetball skills. We'll miss you Coach Fogle!
